Athlete

Race walking events during the Summer Olympics have been contested in a variety of distances at the multi-sport competition. The 2020 Summer Olympics included three races that included a women's and a male's 20-kilometre walk and a 50-kilometre walk. The races were conducted in a final-only format. The first men's events came at the 1908 London Olympics that featured 3500 meters and 10-mile distances. A 10-kilometre version of the event was launched in 1912's Summer Olympics and it was in use through 1952 (skipping three versions from 1928 to 1936). Also, there was a one-time 3000 m walk at the 1920 Antwerp Olympics. In 1956, the 20-kilometer walk by males became the norm for shorter distances and has been in use ever since. The first 50-kilometer race for men, which was longer than women's, was held at the 1932 Summer Olympics. The event was annually held, except in 1976 when the IAAF cancelled the World Championships.
