Bettany Mary Hughes OBE, FSA (born May 27, 1967) is an English historian, author and broadcaster, specialising in classical history. Her published books include mythology and classical antiquity as well as the history of Istanbul. She is a strong advocate for the teaching of classical studies in UK public schools. Hughes was made an OBE in the year 2019. In 2010, she delivered the Hellenic Institute's Tenth Annual Lecture "Ta Erotika, The Things of Love" and in 2011, she spoke at the Royal Television Society's Huw Wilson Memorial Lecture. She said that television history is flourishing and is enjoying a new golden time. She chaired the Orange Prize for Fiction in 2011 which was the only UK annual prize for writing exclusively by women. Hughes is patron of The Iris Project which promotes the teaching of Latin and Greek in UK public schools. She is an honorary patron of Classics For All, a national campaign that aims to bring classical languages and the study of ancient civilisations into the state curriculum. She is an advisor to the Foundation for Science, Technology and Civilisation which aims to promote large-scale collaboration projects between East and West.
