Bettany Mary Hughes OBE, FSA was born in May 1967. She is an English historian and writer, who specializes in the field of classical history. Her published books cover classical antiquity and myth as well as the history of Istanbul. She is involved in promoting the teaching of the classics in UK state schools. Hughes was awarded an OBE in the year 2019. In 2010, she spoke at the Hellenic Institute's Tenth Annual Lecture "Ta Erotika, The Things of Love" and in 2011, she spoke at the Royal Television Society's Huw Wilson Memorial Lecture. She said that television history is flourishing and has entered a golden age. She was the chair of the Orange Prize for Fiction in 2011, which is the only annual prize for writing entirely by women. Hughes is a patron to The Iris Project which promotes teaching Latin as well as Greek in UK public schools. Classics For All is her official patron. The campaign's goal is to restore ancient languages and civilisations into public schools. She acts as an advisor to the Foundation for Science, Technology and Civilisation, which seeks to foster large-scale collaboration that bridge East and West.
